Naomi Osaka withdrew from the French Open and I stan! She’s reminding us all of some important lessons in life.
I’ve struggled with my mental health. For me, it’s been a long journey to wellness and I’m still on the path to recognizing what works best for me as I grow and change. Naomi Osaka has given us a rare public moment. This last year has been hellish and she’s showing us all how important it is to put ourselves first. Of course, she’s at a place in her career where she can do that. She can pay the fines, she can say no. She’s beyond established. Unfortunately, not everyone is. Naomi Osaka’s decision brought so much to mind for me these last few months. What’s top of mind is that it’s not just about mental health, it’s about stability. It’s about autonomy, It’s about community support.
The craziness that ensued after Naomi said no to press conferences showed me just how important community is. While many of us supported Naomi, key players in the sports community did not and thus she was forced to withdraw. A key opportunity to improve the system (and the format of the press conference according to Naomi) was missed. I imagine, and invite you to join me in imagining, what it would be like if those key players had heard Naomi’s ask and let her skip the press? Would it be so bad? Would all players suddenly drop their work obligations? Or would it be the start of a healthier workplace dynamic? What I’m imagining is mostly good. I imagine clear communications and boundaries that allow athletes to rest their minds no matter where they are in their careers. I also imagine that instead of debating what could have been, we as a society would be reaping the benefits of an international display of support and compassion. A move in the right direction for global mental health.
